Also I was pretty right on with that Yeah Yeah Yeahs prediction, if you look at the tepid response that the really-quite-good Show Your Bones got.

The History of the Gimlet →
Gimlets were a semi-indirect outgrowth of scurvy prevention efforts! Now I will feel a little more “healthy” when I go about drinking them. (I love social histories of cocktails so much. You should read And A Bottle Of Rum if you enjoyed this link.) (via ohrohin / newsweek)

Moreover, AOL says its technology also streamlines the process of assigning, editing and publishing stories, and can record data about every story, such as a synopsis, key words and a location, so the stories can be refreshed quickly. In December, when it becomes a stand-alone company, AOL will begin to tap a new digital-newsroom system that uses a series of algorithms to predict the types of...

– Alexander Basek on David Carr’s “wherefore art thou, media?” piece, which Doree, Foster, and I hashed out a bit last night on Twitter, too. (We came to a similar conclusion about writing jobs being left to the already-comfortable or the comfortable-with-working-for-nothing. And...

tomewing: There is a thought-provoking idea in pretty much every section of this danah boyd talk but this bit especially leapt out at me: “People consume content that stimulates their mind and senses. That which angers, excites, energizes, entertains, or otherwise creates an emotional response. This is not always the “best” or most informative content, but that which triggers a reaction. This...

Normally I’d just chalk this anguished bit of “up the empire” fluff up to Entertainment Weekly’s Twilight-borne-SEO-at-all-cost overlords finally getting to the movie critics, but Gleiberman’s assertion that teenage girls have “a new power and prevalence” in the wake of New Moon’s success is so flawed on its face that I have to weigh in. I...

Huh.
NARAS has a “stated policy of not allowing AMA performers to appear on the Grammys,” according to Hits. So… who’s left to perform on the Grammys then? Taylor Swift, Susan Boyle, Beyoncé, Mariah, Kings Of Leon, and, uh… Owl City? Even Whitney, the old Grammy standby, is ineligible. Perhaps the Grammy producers will figure out a way to reanimate Michael Jackson in...

dyfl, in the aftermath of Kris Allen’s victory a few months back: I believe very strongly that neither Adam nor Allison should sign with 19 Entertainment. The whole silver lining of Adam losing (which, by the way, America: BOOOOO) is that now his first record gets to be way, WAY more interesting.

Rapper 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III, has settled his lawsuit he filed last year against Yum! Brands’ Taco Bell, according to the New York Post.
