“Integrity.”

Raptoravatar on Bon Iver’s wahhmbulance call:

I’m going to be honest here and say that this makes me at least like him for having integrity.

Also, this makes me think that one of the unsung downsides about poptimism is that it makes us way more okay with treating our artists like whores.

“Integrity”?

I mean not to pull out Classic Rock Canard Numero Uno, but if collaborating is good enough for Dylan, it’s more than sufficient enough for Justin Vernon. Especially since JV’s nominated song is ALMOST SIX MINUTES LONG, which is a lot of time on a relatively short broadcast. (It is also almost six minutes of gurgly nothingness, but YMMV on that point obv.)

Having an entertaining program that gets to all the important bits does not = “treating artists like whores.” And I suspect that Vernon is speaking from a slightly privileged place here — he has a huge fanbase with Important People already, so maybe he just doesn’t see the upside. Which is fine! But God, just be honest about it, instead of hiding your privilege behind claims of being above it all.
