But he also wasn’t too shy to note that he has profited from the other band’s recent absence. “They released a record in 2003, and that was it,” he said. “There was really nothing to compare it to until some one else came along and wrote the next chapter. Maybe that’s this record. Maybe that’s this band.”
”

- Seriously, fuck this Owl City guy in the ear. “Wrote the next chapter”? They got so collectively excited that they drove him away—the appearance was canceled, five people went to the hospital, and a senior vice president at Island Def Jam got arrested!!

He was in custody Friday night, pending charges that could include criminal nuisance, endangering the welfare of a minor and obstructing government administration, Smith said.

“We asked for his help in getting the crowd to go away by sending out a Twitter message,” Smith said. “By not cooperating with us we feel he put lives in danger and the public at risk.”

Arrested for failure to Tweet? Oh, 2009.

Bieber was planning on signing his album at “the tween clothing store Justice.” This even though there’s apparently an FYE still open at that shopping center! Poor music, part 1,459—especially when you think about how these days, a 3,000-copy sales boost isn’t something to sneeze at. I wonder how many people in attendance bought the album anyway?

Limore Tabid, 11, of Roslyn Heights, had arrived at the mall only to find out the event was canceled. “I am so mad,” Limore said. “He’s a heartbreaker. They should send us free tickets or something.”

At least the “give me stuff” industriousness of the Long Island preteen hasn’t been dampened by this terrible tragedy. Silver linings!

The same thing held for print music magazines, which didn’t come with “back” buttons: stuck on a bus with a copy of one, you’d be a lot more likely to read about the genres and bands you didn’t like. Not just out of boredom, but to have a better idea of what surrounded the stuff you did like — what other people were listening to, or the ways they talked about it, or just what kinds of sub-trends and mediocrities and bad ideas were floating around your preferred genre, and what interesting conclusions might be drawn from them.

Not to mention that the way a reader’s eye travels around a page, and past pages that can be stopped at and browsed even if they weren’t the thing that the reader was turning pages to get to, results in an experience that’s very different than the point-and-click-a-headline method for selecting reading material online. That increased opportunity for serendipitous intake is crucial, especially since it allows people to find out about topics — whether they be cultural or political or both or something else entirely — that they wouldn’t necessarily make the effort to seek out on their own.

That mall in the old Limelight space is going to have a music store!

The thing I find baffling about this: Why are the labels willing to throw these massive albums onto the Billboard chart with only one day of sales data in the week? Or am I wrong about how the chart weeks run?

But, um, yes, nobody in the wider world will notice or care, guaranteed.

Chart weeks run Monday to Sunday, so theoretically putting albums out on a Monday would make more sense.
