Greatest band, greatest debut album, greatest closing track.
i'm maura johnston. i edit maura magazine and write all over the place.
This was one of the first songs I fell in love with hard. I first bought Bellybutton on cassette, and I would rewind this song over and over and over again no matter where I was listening—at home, in my dad’s car, at the bakery where I worked. It works on every level—the opening chords, the strident chorus. The bridge is perfect; the way it crashes to an end even more so.
Seeing Jellyfish live in 1993 was maybe one of the most joyous live-music experiences of my entire life. I was made giddy by the mere idea these songs that I had treasured so much in my bedroom were being recreated in front of me; it made me feel like live music was a gift, even if there weren’t pieces of fruit shooting out of hats at the climactic moments.
Best ever.
I can’t decide if it’s comforting or weird that there are no videos from the Jellyfish show at the Academy that I attended 18 years ago.
This song is perfect.
