Identity politics is one of the problems with music writing, not one of the solutions.
This is absolutely and utterly incorrect. Note: I’m not intending this as a critique of Uncool, or its mission. (I was asked to participate and never followed up, not because of any antipathy toward the site or its founders but because I’ve been really busy and distracted in the weeks since I got canned.) But if you don’t see that straight white male dudes dominate the conversation in music writing and do so in a way that results in hermetic coverage of acts that appeal to that very demographic (and that “others” outsiders/outliers in various ways that can sometimes be appalling, from commenting on women’s physical presentation to treating R&B that hasn’t been test marketed to blogs first as a joke to etc etc and so on) then you are probably blind, or so used to having yourself be treated as the default that you think “identity politics” are little more than a trifle.
