Take My Beleaguered Stance Please
What bugs me about concepts like Steak & Blowjob Day is the notion of relationship-as-chore, the whole notion that there has to be some “payback” for Valentine’s Day. Which I know is commoditized to all hell and given an importance that tends to overshadow-to-ruin the emotions that are supposed to be at the core of the gestures expressed—I guess that’s why it’s seen as being “for women,” because, lol, we’re so hard to deal with and demanding, amiright? I wonder if there’s eventually going to be a movement to dub a heterosexual couple’s one-month wedding anniversary in a similar way, since I mean Bridezillas are just so ka-ra-zayyyyy and they have to be brought in line for acting that way.
Not to be all “college!” but the way Valentine’s Day is supposed to be this overcompensation of sentiment that makes up for the slights of the other 360-plus days of the year reminds me of how Dillo Day at Northwestern was the One Day Where Everyone Was Allowed To Get Fucked Up. Are all of these sorts of behaviors merely extensions of this country’s fucked-up puritanical ideals about allowing oneself pleasure? In order to be okay with being happy you have to tell everyone that you’re really miserable, or worry yourself into a tizzy about things not being totally perfect? Because Christ, it is depressing.
(Oh and yeah I know I’m totally speaking from a perspective of “jeez if you’re not at least 51% content with the idea that someone loves you, or at least wants to spend a lot of time with you and make you feel good, and you possess similar sentiments, well then maybe I’m a fool for being as frustrated with this department of my life as I am, is that all there is, etc.” But honestly.)
